Today I get to rub shoulders with a fabulous woman named Keren from Free Pretty Things for You. Keren has to be the most genuine and sweet person I know. Get to know her, seriously, she's wonderful!
She created two great printable cake banners to make for your mothers this Mother's Day. I had the honor of making the cake and creating two different ways to top them using her free downloadable image. Keep on reading for the how-to and the downloads!
Here are the supplies I used to create both cake banners and the cake topper.
1. Fake Moss
2. Adorable little clay pots
3. Millinery flower pick
4. paper lace
5.baker's twine
6. ribbon (I ended up not using this after all)
7.Sticks from two of these rock candy suckers
8. translucent butterflies
9. 1/8 cup uncooked rice
10. white acrylic paint
Let's make the banner first, then we'll get to the rest.
I cut some tiny little pieces of my paper lace to glue around the edges of each triangle on the back. Then I used my knife to gently score on the fold line to make it easier to fold such a tiny piece.
I folded each letter over a strand of baker's twine then glued it in place. You could use ribbon or string here if you don't have baker's twine or use THIS tutorial to make your own.
If you want, keep it simple and skip the paper lace as shown on the cake below.
When I listed two sucker sticks in the supplies list, you may have questioned me here. I had to steal them from my girls AFTER they ate the suckers. So I scrubbed them clean then painted over them with some white paint. I figure at this point, they are pretty safe to use on a cake for my family, even if they have been slobbered on by a 4 year old. OR you could glue a wooden ball to a dowel to achieve the same look. Paper straws would also be cute.
Now, lets kick it up a notch and show off your inner crazy. (when I purchased some of these items at my local craft store, the woman at the checkout counter kinda gave me a strange look when I told her they were for a cake) I love to use interesting items in unusual ways. Here is where I pulled out that fake moss. I can pretty much guarantee that no one will have ever seen moss used on a cake before so you might get some weird looks. I'm used to that, so I just smile and keep on going!
To get this look you will:
First, place a circle of parchment paper under your moss to protect your cake.
Second, stick some flowers in your adorable pots, then fill up with rice to weigh it down a bit.
Third, stick your banner posts in the pots with the banner tied to them. They will stay in place with the rice there.
Fourth, tape a butterfly to a length of thin wire and stick in your cake.
p.s. wanna make the same ruffle cake I did? Check out this video HERE.
p.p.s. My back is doing quite a bit better after some TLC from my wonderful Chiropractor and some rest. Thanks to those of you who sent well wishes my way and to my children who lovingly planted some flowers in the garden for me for my Mother's Day Gift so I wouldn't have to get down on the ground to do it myself. LOVE them so much!

These are adorable! Thank you so much for the tutorial. I think I will attach them to string like you did, and then use them on the front of a card. My moms live too far away to send a cake :)
